Assoc. Prof. Dr. Florian Grubhofer comes from Dornbirn in the state of Vorarlberg, Austria, where he attended elementary school and the high schoo. He completed his medical studies at the University of Innsbruck in the minimum period of study. A formative part of his medical studies was his stay abroad at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, USA. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Grubhofer then began his specialist training at Zurich University Hospital and Balgrist University Hospital. During this time, he completed the following specialties: 6 months in general visceral and transplant surgery, 9 months in urology, 6 months in plastic surgery and burn surgery and 1 month in vascular surgery. This was followed by 2 years of traumatology at the University Hospital Zurich under the direction of Prof. Simmen and then orthopaedic training at Balgrist University Hospital from March 2014 und the direction of Prof. Christian Gerber. After successfully passing his specialist examination, he was promoted to senior physician in the shoulder and elbow team at Balgrist University Hospital in May 2017 by the then chairman Professor of Orthopaedics, Prof. Christian Gerber. This was followed by a one-year senior physician rotation in Prof. Sandro Fucentese’s knee team – also at Balgrist University Hospital.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Grubhofer successfully passed the American medical state examinations and thus acquired his medical license for the state of Massachusetts, USA. This enabled him to deepen his specialization as part of the renowned 1-year Harvard Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship in Boston, USA, under the direction of Prof. Jon J.P. Warner. After returning to Switzerland, he habilitated at the University of Zurich and was awarded a teaching license (Venia Legendi) as a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine (Privatdozent – corresponding to Assoc. Professor). From 2022, he was promoted to Senior Physician (Leitender Arzt) of the Shoulder and Elbow Team at Balgrist University Hospital, where he worked for over ten years in total.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Florian Grubhofer has published over 50 scientific studies as author and co-author in renowned, peer-reviewed journals and has written numerous book chapters. Of particular note is his role as first author of a chapter in “Rockwood – The Shoulder”, the definitive textbook on shoulder surgery in the USA. He has presented several of his studies as first author at the world’s largest orthopaedic congress, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), including in 2016 in Orlando, Florida; 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada; and 2021 in Chicago, Illinois. He has also presented his research findings at international shoulder world congresses in Jeju, South Korea, and São Paulo, Brazil. He has also been a regular lecturer for many years, giving lectures to medical students at the University of Zurich and medical students at the University of Zurich as well as internships over the past ten years.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Grubhofer is a member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) Society and a reviewer for the “Journal for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery” (JSES). In parallel to his clinical and academic activities, Dr. Grubhofer worked for five years as team doctor for the Grasshoppers Zurich soccer team in the Swiss national league. Today, Dr. Florian Grubhofer contributes his experience to his founded center for shoulder and elbow in Kitzbühel.
