Postoperative Rehabilitation Protocol for Elbow Stabilization Surgery (According to P.D. Dr. Florian Grubhofer)

Content
Phase 1: First 14 Days After Surgery

• Immobilization in a motion brace.

• Only finger movements and slow movements are allowed exclusively within the brace

• The wound should remain covered with the waterproof dressing until the wound check (10 to 14 days after surgery).

Strictly no weight-bearing on the operated arm.

• Pain medication should be taken as prescribed. If no pain is present, the patient may discontinue medication independently.

• Cold packs can be applied immediately postoperatively, but the brace must not be removed

Phase 2: Week 3 to Week 6 Postoperatively

• After suture removal and removal of the dressing, increased range of motion exercises are now allowed.

• The brace must still be worn consistently.

No weight-bearing on the operated arm!

• Patients should actively practice elbow extension and flexion.

• Physical therapy should be initiated and followed according to the physiotherapy protocol.

Important: Range of motion exercises must be performed daily by the patient.

Phase 3: Seventh to Twelfth Postoperative Week

• Range of motion exercises can now be performed independently without the brace

• When leaving the home, the brace should still be worn for another six weeks.

Still no weight-bearing allowed!

• The brace may be removed at home

Valgus and varus stress (side loading of the elbow) must be avoided – explanation by the physical therapist or P.D. Dr. Florian Grubhofer.

Phase 4: From 12 Weeks Postoperatively

• Full range of motion is now allowed without the brace.

Gradual weight-bearing may begin (3–5 kg).

• Valgus and varus stress should still be avoided.

Phase 5: From 16 Weeks Postoperatively

Full weight-bearing is allowed, including valgus and varus stress.

Contact sports may be resumed.
